The @newmexicanculture Ekphrastic Poetry Contest i

The @newmexicanculture Ekphrastic Poetry Contest is back for its fourth year, and submissions are now open.

The contest is open to New Mexico residents ages 9 to 99, with Kid (ages 9 and younger), Youth (ages 10 to 18), and Adult (ages 19 and older) categories. Submissions are due Friday, February 26, 2027, with a limit of one per person. Winners will be announced during National Poetry Month in April and invited to read their poems at a special poetry reading in the spring.

Ekphrastic poetry responds to a work of visual art. For the contest, museums, historic sites, and divisions across the state each selected one piece from their collections to inspire New Mexico writers. This year’s 12 selections are on view from Santa Fe to Mesilla.

Our selection is Coffin Airplane by Seth Kane Kwei, a 1975 fantasy coffin shaped like a Pan American 727 jetliner. You can see it in person in The Art Underground: Fantasy Coffins of Ghana, on view at the Museum of International Folk Art through September 5, 2027.

View all 12 artworks and submit your poem: http://www.nmculture.dca.nm.gov/publications/poetry-contest

Part two: the sun came out, and the marigolds went up. Visiting artist Pável Acevedo and local artists David Sloan and Matthew Chase-Daniel finished their Día de los Muertos installation of prints by Colectivo Subterráneos. This Oaxacan printmaking collective works in the tradition of Mexico’s Taller de Gráfica Popular.
Come see the finished installation at the Museum of International Folk Art.
